We Are On Our Way!

Throughout the year, I (Cynthia Ramirez) will be updating the PSWE community on how our multiple Intramural Sports teams are progressing. There are 8 rounds of intramural sports, 4 per semester. I will be giving background information on each sport and standings. I will also be announcing the MVPs for each sport. An ‘MVP’ is the Most-Valuable Person, chosen by the captain and the team after each game for someone they feel deserves extra recognition. All PSWE members are more than welcome to support the teams as they play, by checking the PSWE Calendar.

Starting off the 2014-2015 Intramural season, PSWE formed two teams. The first being Floor Hockey, for the chance for a repeat championship. The second was Inner Tube Water Polo, a new sport for PSWE. Both teams have excelled and are well on their way to winning the first of many championships this year. Read below for recaps about both sports! Come out to see the Floor Hockey team play their championship game on Wednesday, October 15th in the CoRec – Mac Gym at 8:30pm. The Inner Tube Water Polo team has their first playoff game on Sunday, October 19th at 4:15pm in the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.

Floor Hockey

This is not the first time that PSWE has played floor hockey. After a championship in 2012, and an off season during 2013, PSWE came to win. Facing AGD in a best of 5 series, PSWE is currently tied 2-2 with the winning game to be played next Wednesday. The high intensity of the sport leads to more physical competition between the two teams for the hope to win this championship. The game includes a 6×6 game, with 5 players and 1 goalie. PSWE plays usually with 3 forwards and 2 defensemen to have the best coverage on the field. Everyone works as a team though, covering all sections of the field and backing up other teammates.

Inner Tube Water Polo

This season, the PSWE intramural participants wanted to leave their safety zone and try a completely new sport this semester. Inner tube water polo consists of a 5 by 5 game, with 4 players and 1 goalie per team. The game starts by the the ball being thrown into the middle of the pool with both teams swimming feverishly to catch the ball first. The ball is then thrown between players on the inner tube, who are careful not to cross into the goalie box. Players have the opportunity to even dunk the opposing team, if that players holds the ball.

It took PSWE a few goals the first game to adjust not only to the physicality of the sport, but also just how to exactly maneuver the inner tubes. It happened more than once where a few PSWE players accidentally dunked themselves. However through all these adjustments, PSWE has had some very high scoring games. These also include hat tricks (where a player scores 3 goals in one game) by both Brittany Kaiser and ReaAnna Jenkins. Other accomplishments for the team include:

 Statistics:

Catherine Axon: 4 goals, 2 assists, 1 dunk

Daniell Gaerke: 3 goals, 2 assists

Johanna Geegan: 3 saves (goalie)

Julia Hom: 2 assists, 1 dunk

ReaAnna Jenkins: 3 goals, 2 assists

Brittany Kaiser: 6 goals, 1 assist

Monica Rosenberg: 3 saves (goalie)

Rebecca Turski: 1 goal, 1 assist, 1 dunk, 1 save
