Meet the Outreach Directorship

Outreach directorship 2013-2014 School Year

Note:  This is the first in a series of articles profiling the directorships within the PSWE Executive Board.

Meet the Directorship!

Outreach directorship 2013-2014 School YearThe Outreach Directorship is made up of a team of girls that are passionate about Purdue and engineering. Their overall goal is to try to get people interested in engineering, engineering at Purdue and, of course, PSWE!

Outreach runs events like TEAMS and Girl Scout Day [GSD]. These events, organized by Kara Garrison (TEAMS Day Chair), Anna Bukur (TEAMS Night Chair), and Madeline Meads (GSD Chair), teach kids from K-12 about engineering. They are motivated to inspire kids to continue their education and reach their full potential by using creativity to solve problems.

The Outreach Directorship also runs events like Exploring Engineering at Purdue, run by Michelle Wellman, and Senior Sleepover, run by Holly Avins. These events are geared towards showing juniors and seniors in high school how great Purdue engineering is and helping them explore whether or not Purdue is the right choice for them.

This directorship has events at least two times a month. October and November are even more packed with opportunities to get involved with Outreach! If you are interested in volunteering within the Outreach Directorship, contact either Deanna Esposito or Kaitlyn Fisher, the Outreach co-Directors.

Meet the Directors!

Deanna Esposito

Deanna is a senior in Agricultural and Biological Engineering. This is her second year as an executive board member.

Q: Why did you join the executive board?

A:  I joined the executive board so that I can be more involved in SWE.

Q: What is your favorite part about SWE?

A:  I love that because SWE is such a large organization, it really has the power to make an impact. SWE provides amazing opportunities for SWE members, but we also have a huge presence on campus, and we even impact the people in the community outside of Purdue. This is also why I love to be involved with Outreach.

Q: What Outreach events are you most looking forward to this year?

A:  I’m really looking forward to all the new Outreach events we have this year including the TEAMS night events, a second GSD, and more events for Senior Sleepover. The outreach chairs have been working so hard to put together all these events, and I am excited to see their success!

Kaitlyn Fisher

Kaitlyn is a junior in mechanical engineering. She has been a member of the executive board for two years.

Q: Why did you join the executive board?

A:  I joined the executive board because I really like PSWE. I wanted to have a say in how things run and hopefully help make our section the best it can be!

Q: What is your favorite part about SWE?

A:  I love how in SWE I’m surrounded by women in engineering (Swengineers?) because we tend to think in a similar way. Its a nice break from the atmosphere in classes or other groups.

Q: What Outreach events are you most looking forward to this year?

A:  I’m really excited for the activities at Girl Scout Day and Senior Sleepover! We’re packing both days with fun filled engineering related projects like make-your-own guitar hero and a photo scavenger hunt, and it’s going to be a really great time.
